Water Safety for Kids

Be safe this summer. Don't forget water safety for kids.

Summertime is a great time of year! It is the time that we moms love to spend more time outdoors with the little ones. However, the sun has no mercy. It can be relentlessly hot, especially if you live in the southern states. But a nice cool dip in the pool, lake, or going to the beach can be a great hot reliever. But...

Danger could be lurking. A child under the age of 3, can drown in as little as 1 inch of water. And around the house there are places that your child could drown that you may not have considered.

  1. five-gallon buckets
  2. toilets
  3. ditches
  4. fountains

However, water is not scary if you have water safety. Here are some water safety tips for you and your little ones.

  • Adult supervision is crucial when your little one is around water. WHEN AROUND WATER: NEVER LEAVE YOUR CHILD ALONE!

  • Always have kids (5 yrs old and older) swim with a buddy.

  • Never — even for a moment — leave children alone or in the care of another young child while in or around water. This includes bathtubs, pools, spas, wading pools, irrigation ditches, or any other open standing water.

  • Make sure your child (4 yrs old and older) knows how to swim.

  • Make sure your little one wears a U.S. Coast Guard Approved life jacket when swimming or on a boat.

  • Always put on lots of sunscreen to protect the skin. It's also a good idea to wear sunglasses and a hat to protect your eyes and skin from the sun's harmful rays.

  • Never swim when there is a storm. Lightning and water is a bad combo.

  • Learn CPR just in case.

This summer holiday season will be a great time to have fun in the water. However, don’t forget to be prepared with the right kids water safety tips!
