Infant Diaper Rash Treatment

Learn how to treat an infant diaper rash with these diaper rash remedies.

An infant diaper rash is no laughing matter. Everyone that has to deal with it suffers. From the parent that has to see their little one suffer, to the little one that now has to endure their “once soft diaper wipe” turn into a sandpaper wipe.

Baby diaper rashes are very common in little ones. It can happen when the skin is wet and irritated for a prolonged period of time. Poop and urine are the main culprits of a diaper rash.

Even with frequent diaper changes, it is still possible for your little one to get a diaper rash. Unfortunately, he/she may be prone to getting diaper rashes. The best defense for him/her is to:

  • Frequently change his/her diaper.

  • Apply diaper rash cream or a petroleum based barrier EVERYTIME you put a new diaper on your little one.

  • Periodically “air out” your child’s bum by letting him/her go without a diaper. (To prevent an accident, make sure it is not after he/she has eaten or drank.)

  • Clean your little one with sensitive wipes or plain ‘ol water and a face towel. (Never use wipes that have fragrance or alcohol. The additives can irritate your little one’s skin.)

  • Make sure your baby’s bum is completely dry before putting a new diaper on.

Diaper Rash Treatment

If your little one unfortunately gets a diaper rash, you can do the following to soothe his/her sore tush.
  • Frequently change your little one’s diaper.

  • Don’t wipe their tush. It will hurt. The best thing to do is to put some warm water in a squirt bottle and squirt the area, and then gently pat their tush dry.

  • Tucks wipes work great! Whenever my little ones were irritated down there and pooped in their diaper, I wiped them with a Tucks wipe. I first squirted them with the warm water, and then I gently wiped them with the Tucks wipe. (The largest size wipes work best.) The wipe is safe to use on babies and does not sting or burn.

  • Air them out. After cleaning your little one, it is a good idea to let him/her air dry for a few minutes.

  • Don’t forget to apply diaper rash cream or a petroleum based barrier to your child’s bum. This creates a barrier to prevent irritation.

  • If using disposable diapers, make sure it is not too tight. Try going up a size. Also when closing the diaper, do not pull and stretch the tabs to close the diaper.

Remember to check with your little one’s doctor if:

  • Blisters or sores appear.
  • The diaper rash is bright red or bleeding.
  • Your little one develops a fever.
  • Peeling red skin.
