Apartment Safety and Condo Safety
Move furniture or other items away from balcony and deck railings.
Lock doors that access the balcony.
Install window-safety devices on all windows.
All hazardous materials are kept out of reach or little ones.
Install carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors outside every bedroom and on every level of your house.
Install safety doorknob covers on every door leading outside.
Make sure house plants are out of reach of children.
Townhouse Safety and General House Safety
Make sure all cleaning products are out of reach of little ones and stored away from food.
Make sure all alcoholic beverages are stored away in a locked cabinet.
Install window-safety devices on all windows.
Install carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors outside every bedroom and on every level of your house.
Install safety doorknob covers on every door leading outside.
Make sure house plants are out of reach of children.
Stairway Safety
Install safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.
Make sure your hand railing is properly installed.
See if there are any loose snags in the carpet.
Keep the area near the stairs clutter-free.
If you have steps outside your home, keep them free of ice and snow.
Infant Safety and Toddler Safety
Store toothpaste, makeup, nail polish, deodorants, vitamins, and medicines out of reach of children.
Don't forget to also store razors, curling irons and blow dryers out of reach of children.
All first-aid items should be in a locked cabinet.
Diaper rash cream and other baby care products should be kept out of reach of children.
Child Safety
No medicines (i.e. birth control pills, etc.) should be left out on the dresser or bedside table.
Keep all alcoholic beverages in a locked cabinet.
When cooking, make sure you always turn your pot handles towards the back of the stove.
Never leave a cup of hot coffee or tea on a counter where a child can reach.
Keep knives out of reach of children.
In case of emergency, teach your children how to dial 911.
Make sure that your child knows his full name, phone number and address.
Talk to your children about escape routes and what to do in case of an emergency.
Fireplace Safety
Have the chimney inspected annually, and cleaned.
Have a cap installed at the top of the chimney so animals and debris don't block the chimney.
Keep the area around the fireplace clear.
Never leave a fire unattended.
Make sure the fire is completely out before going to bed or leaving the house.
Do not allow small children near the fireplace.
Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
Keep the key to the gas starting fireplace out of reach of children.
Laundry Safety
Store all detergents, bleach, fabric softeners, ammonia, and other cleaning products are out of reach of children.
Use a safety doorknob cover on the laundry door.
Pool, Whirlpool, and Jacuzzi Safety
Never leave your children alone in or near the pool.
Learn CPR.
Keep little ones under the age of 5 within arm's reach while in the pool.
Put up a fence to separate your house from the pool.
Install a self-closing, self-locking gate.
Keep rescue equipment and a telephone by the pool.
Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren't tempted to reach for them.
Teach your kids how to swim.
Do not place objects near the pool or spa fence that would allow a youngster to climb over.
Install a safety cover over the pool.
Pools or spas should never be used if any of the grate outlets are missing or broken.
Drain any standing water from the surface of your pool or spa cover.
If your child is missing, always check the pool first.
Backyard Safety
Make sure that backyard plants are not poisonous.
Keep steps, decks, and patios in good repair.
Make sure hand rails are secure.
While outdoors, use bug repellent so little ones don't get bit by mosquitoes and other biting insects.
Make sure there aren't any ant hills, bee hives, or poison ivy in your backyard.
Make sure all gardening equipment are stored out of reach of little ones.
Install a fence to make sure that little children don't wander off.
Keep children away from grills.
Make sure play equipment do not have jagged edges, rust, and loose or broken parts.
Teach children proper ways to use play equipment.
Make sure that play equipment is properly anchored in the ground.
Use soft material such as rubber, sand, or mulch under and around play equipment to soften the blow of a possible fall.
Protecting your little one from lead poisoning.
If you rent, notify your landlord of peeling or chipping paint.
Clean up paint chips immediately.
After cleaning, thoroughly rinse sponges and mop heads thoroughly.
Keep children from chewing window sills or other painted surfaces.
If you suspect there are lead surfaces in your home, you should hire a certified lead "abatement" contractor to permanently and safely remove these surfaces.
Garage Safety
Keep all automotive supplies, gasoline, and gardening supplies stored in a locked area or on a shelf up high and out of reach of children.
Store all sharp and large items on the wall to prevent falls.
Keep children's playthings in an area that can easily be accessed to prevent exploring possible dangerous areas.
Do not use generators or grills inside of a garage.
Install a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector in the garage.
Secure wall units to the wall and store heavier items closest to the ground.
Lock electrical supply boxes so little ones can't access them.
Mount a fire extinguisher in the garage.
Basement Safety
Make sure there are windows in every room.
Make sure every door and window opens easily.
Clear away anything blocking windows such as a tree, shrub, bars or even a lawnmower.
Install a smoke alarm in the basement.
Keep flammable material away from water heaters and the furnace.
Never store items under the stairs; they could catch fire and block an escape.
Keeping the elderly safe at home
Install grab bars, shower seats, hand-held showers, and raised toilet seats in the bathroom.
Make sure there are railings on all stairways.
Add nightlights in the hallway between the bedroom and bathroom.
Remove tripping hazards.
Space Heater Safety
Purchase a heater with a guard around the heating element.
If you must use an extension cord, make sure it is a heavy duty cord marked with a # 14 gauge or larger wire.
Keep portable electric heaters away from water and never touch an electric heater if you are wet.
To prevent a possible fire, do not store anything within 3 feet of a space heater.
Use space heaters that have a thermostat control and an automatic shut-off feature.
Turn off the heater when you leave the room or unplug while gone for the day.
