Food Allergy Symptoms
What are the food allergy symptoms in infants and toddlers?
Do you have a fussy baby? Does he/she have excess gas, loose stools, or vomiting? Before you send him/her back to the stork, he may be having an allergic reaction to a certain food.
I’m just kidding. I know you would not really send your precious little one back. But it can be frustrating to hear your little one crying a lot, especially if you are sleep deprived.
Most food allergies begin in the first or second year of life. And they are common in little ones that have a parent or parents with allergies, asthma, or eczema. In fact, it is believed that if you have one parent with an allergy, (dust, cats, dogs, foods, etc.) there is a 50 percent chance that you will have an allergy too. It jumps to about 75 percent if both parents have allergies.
Usually symptoms show up after a few minutes to a couple of hours after eating a particular food. Some symptoms in infants are:
- loose stools
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- blood or mucus in their stools
- itching
- tingling in the mouth
- swelling
- fussiness or excessive crying (colic)
- difficulty swallowing
- difficulty breathing
- hives
- watery eyes
- runny nose or nasal congestion
- eczema
- abdominal cramps
- coughing
- wheezing
or…
- In rare cases, DEATH!
So it is very important to make sure to talk with your little one’s pediatrician. That way you can strategize the best solution because unfortunately there is no cure for a food allergy. So the best thing you can do for your little one is to avoid contact with the food he/she is allergic to.
