Fun Fire Safety Activities
Here are some hands on fire safety activities for your preschooler.
Kids love to have fun. That is one of the ways that they learn. And that goes for learning about fire safety too. Fire safety for kids does not have to be scary. It can be fun. So here are some fun fire safety activities for your little one.Tots love firefighters, but… during a fire, they may become scared of them. So why not plan a trip to the fire station so your little one can meet a firefighter. It is best to call and schedule an appointment so they can prepare special goodies for your little one’s visit. Stop, drop, and roll is an important fire safety rule for children to know and practice. To reinforce this method, place orange felt “flames” on your child's shirt. (If they are 3 and older, they can cut the flames out themselves.) Demonstrate how to Cover, Stop, Drop, and Roll on the carpet, to put the flames out. (It is also important to practice covering their face with their hands while rolling.) Hunt For Exits - While out running errands, try to find EXIT signs with your little one. Then keep score by putting tally marks of all the signs found on a sheet of paper. This can be a fun game. The winner gets a treat of Red Hots, a red lollipop, red apples, or drink red punch or juice.Fire Drill - To plan a fire safety evacuation drill, here’s what you can do: Have your little one press the “test” button on the smoke detector. Once the alarm goes off, have him/her shout: “Fire! Fire!” and have all family members evacuate the house. You can also create some unexpected roadblocks/obstacles from time to time such as taping up an imaginary fire that means they cannot leave through that route.Make Firefighter Hats - Take four sheets of newspaper and lay it out on a table (flat) with mismatched corners. Put all four layers on top of the child's head. Make a crown with masking tape by going around the head (covered with newspaper!) Take the newspaper off and roll the outside layers of newspaper to the shape of a firefighter's hat. Tape the rolled part down with small pieces of masking tape. Roll the sides of the hat more than the front and back. Paint the hats and then make a badge for the front of the hat by cutting a diamond on a yellow construction paper. Then have your little one draw what he/she would like on the badge. How low can you go - Clothespin sheets up around the room, about 2 ft from the floor, and practice crawling, low, under the “smoke”. Turn out the lights to practice getting out in the dark. Go around the room and put red dots on hot things and blue dots on cold things. Your little one can practice touching things by using the back of their hands. These are just SOME fun ideas to teach your little one about fire safety. (Don’t forget: October is Fire Safety Month.) There are websites that also have online and printable activities as well. Here are a few sites that I like that focuses on preschool fire safety activities.
