Christmas Safety Tips

You’ve hung the stockings with care, but don’t forget about these Christmas safety tips.

It has been a while since I have put a Christmas tree up. And I don’t think I will put one up this year either.

My little ones are 2 and 4 years old. And I think they would knock that tree down the first chance they get. The lights, the sparkly tinsel, there is no way their curiosity won’t get the best of them. They would have to touch it and that would be the beginning and (sad to say) the end of that tree.

However I do plan on putting up some decor that is not only festive, but safe. I will decorate with:

  • Flameless candles. I have not tried them yet, but I am looking forward to trying them this year. These candles are made from 100% real wax and can flicker like the real thing. They illuminate however by using batteries instead of a flame.
  • Christmas wreath. I plan on decorating one (with only fire resistant stuff of course) with my little ones. That way, it can be our special family memento.
  • Christmas cards and pictures. During this time of the year, our family gets plenty of cards and pictures from our friends and family. This year we are going to try putting them up over and around the doors.
  • Paper ornaments. Christmas ornaments come in all shapes and sizes. So why not paper? I’m going to create chains of ornaments with my little ones. We are going to drape them across windows and doors.

If your family is going to go all out on the decorations, don’t forget to make sure they are safe. Here are some Christmas safety tips to remember.

  1. Unplug any Christmas lights before leaving your house or going to sleep.
  2. Make sure the Christmas tree is at least 3 feet away from any heat source.
  3. If you plan on getting a live tree, remember to give it plenty of water everyday. Dried-out trees are highly flammable.
  4. If you decide to put up an artificial tree, make sure it is flame resistant. Of course, fire resistant does not mean fire proof. However a fire resistant tree will be difficult to burn for a limited amount of time.

  5. Decorate your tree with only fire resistant decorations. If you are not sure, you can spray it with a non-toxic flame retardant spray.
  6. You can also use shatterproof ornaments. That’s right, finally an ornament that does not break, keeping pets and little ones safe.
  7. Use safe Christmas lights. The latest technology in holiday lighting is LED Christmas lights. They last a heck of a lot longer and use about 90% less energy than traditional Christmas lights. That means a lower energy bill during the Christmas months.
  8. They are also safer to use because they do not get as hot as traditional Christmas lights. And they are virtually unbreakable because they are made out of plastic.

Christmas is the best time of year. It is the time where family and friends get together full of cheer and happiness. May your Christmas be filled with these Christmas safety tips and joy.
