How To Handle Your Little One's First Nose Bleed

My kids have not gotten a nose bleed yet, (knock on wood.) but I remember when I was a freshman in college, I had a nosebleed that did not stop bleeding until almost 20 minutes went by. I was scared and thought something may be wrong with me. However, when I talked with the doctor the next day, he informed me that my nose was dry. (It was in the middle of winter in the mountains of Virginia.) He showed me how to stop the bleeding and sure enough, when I had my next one, it worked!

When your little one gets their first nosebleed, the first thing to do is to not panic. A bloody nose is very common in children and most of time, it is due to nose picking, air that is too dry, a cold or allergy, or blowing the nose too hard. It could even just be out of the blue.

The next thing to do is to place a tissue over the bleeding nostril. Do not stick it in the nose; just hold it over the nostril(s) that is bleeding. Make sure your little one is leaning forward slightly so (s)he does not swallow the blood. Next, pinch the nostril that is bleeding anywhere between end of the hard part and tip of the nose. Squeeze the nostril(s) together for about 10 minutes. If it is still bleeding, try squeezing it again for another 10 minutes.

That should do it. Just make sure your little one does not do anything to aggravate it (i.e. blowing their nose or picking it). This may make it bleed again.

HOWEVER....

If your child's nose continues to bleed, a trip to their pediatrician will be needed. Also, if your little one has something stuck up his/her nose or if you think their nose is broken, it is best to take him/her to the doctor as well.
